Include the right to aftercare in the 2010 Childcare Amendment Bill
On Wedneday January 12th January 2011 the Dáil will give its final consideration to the Childcare Amendment Bill. This will be the final chance for TDs to grasp this historic opportunity to protect some of the most vulnerable young people in our society. Over the earlier debates in the Dail and Senate, Fine Gael, Labour and Sinn Fein have all argued to add a section to this legislation which would give young people leaving care a legal right to aftercare support. At first, Minister Barry Andrews seemed to recognise the need for this change, but has since hardened his attitude and has denied the need to provide this legal protection for young people. Many Fianna Fail backbenchers and Green TDs are not sure the Minister has made the right call on this. There is still time to let them know that you think this is a priority and this opportunity should not be lost.
